Malala Yousafzai was only 14 when her whole world was turned upside down in the blink of an eye. On October 9th, 2012, in Swat Valley, Pakistan, a gunman stopped Malala’s school bus and shot Malala Yousafzai in the head, all because Malala had stood up for her education, and the education of millions of other girls around the world.
Malala was born on July 12th, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. Ziauddin and Tor Pekai Yousafzai are Malala’s parents. Malala has two brothers, Atal and Khushal, who are both younger than her. Malala use to attend school at The Khushal Girls High School and college, which Malala’s father established himself. Malala’s parents allowed her to stay up late and debate politics, even though girls were not supposed to do these kinds of things, because they believed that Malala was special, and that she had a gift for public speaking. Though Malala’s childhood was also very devastating. The Taliban announced that on January 15th, 2009, they would be closing down all girls schools in Swat Valley. The Taliban stated that it was, “un-islamic” for girls to attend school. Malala was also considered an embarrassment to most of her family, because she was a girl. When Malala was born, relatives came to her house and said to her mother, don’t worry, next time you’ll have a boy. Women in Pakistan did not have as many rights as Men in Pakistan, and they were often thought of as burdens to the family, though Malala’s parents did not think like that. Malala’s parents knew she was very intelligent from a young age. Malala started Writing a blog for BBC when she was 11 years old, in 2009. She wrote about how the Taliban invaded her village, and how they took away her education, and every other girls education. Malala had used the name, Gul Makai, which means Corn Flower in Urdu, so that the Taliban would not find out it was Malala who was writing that blog. Unfortunately, in December of that year the Taliban found out that it was Malala who had been writing the blog, and they were furious with her, they later tried to find Malala, and wanted to punish her for what she did.
Malala is important because she has stood up for women's education, and made sure that all girls will have a bright future. One thing that Malala has done for education is that she has created the Malala Fund. The Malala Fund’s goal is to make sure every girl receives 12 years of free, safe, quality education. One thing The Malala fund teaches girls is important 21st century skills, such as teaching them how to use computers. Another thing the Malala fund does is helping girls who are at risk of early marriage. Many girls in places such as Lebanon and Jordan, are often married off to complete strangers, and are forced to live with them the rest of their life, the girls parents often make these arrangements. The Malala fund gives these girls education so they can learn about what career they want to have, and so they can decide if they would like to further their education. The Malala Fund gives people information about how many girls are being deprived of an education, so that people will understand that something has to be done so that this situation gets better. Malala is also important is because she speaks up, for those that cannot. There have been many cases where Malala has risked her life for the education of others. One example is that when Malala was just 11 years old, she started writing a blog to BBC about what the Taliban were doing in swat valley, and how they were taking away her education. The Taliban was furious when they found out Malala was writing this. Even though they Taliban were furious with Malala, the people of Swat Valley did not think they would hurt a child, but On october 9th, 2012 the Taliban stopped a school bus and asked for Malala. All of Malala’s friends silently looked at her, and then The Taliban shot her in the head., along with two of Malala’s friends. Malala nearly died, she had to be flown to a hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan, and then to U.K. The surgery was hard and extensive, but they eventually removed the bullet from Malala’s head. Malala’s father stated that the swelling went down and that she would need everyone to pray for her, because the next 24-48 hours are very crucial in seeing what will happen with Malala. When people heard this, a tremendous amount of support and love came pouring in from all over the word. Malala once said, “ I don’t want to be remembered as the girl who was shot. I want to be remembered as the girl who stood up”. Malala does not let her being shot in the head define her. Malala is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, even if she is risking her life. Malala has done many important things for our world, and still is working towards making sure every girl has an education.
Malala was inspired to stand up for women’s rights for many reasons, but one of the biggest reasons why Malala stood up for what she believes in is because of her father. Malala’s father taught her from a very early age to stand up for what she believes in, and to not let anybody get in the way of her dreams. Ziauddin said once at his TED conference talk in 2014, “When Malala was born and for the first time...I went and looked in her eyes...I felt extremely honored.” “In Pakistan, the birth of a girl isn’t something to rejoice in… when a girl is born...she is not welcomed neither by father, nor by mother.” Malala’s father supported her and encouraged her to stand up for what she believes in. Another reason why Malala was inspired to stand up for girls education is that Malala would not let the Taliban take away her education. Malala felt there was really only two options on how to deal with the taliban, remain silent and be killed, or stand up and be killed. Malala felt it was better to stand up for what she believes in, and take that risk of being killed. Malala once said in an interview with Hari Sreenivasan, “ And, at that time, I had really two options. One was to remain silent and wait to be killed. And then the second was to speak up and then be killed.” Malala was inspired to stand up for girls education because Malala’s dad was always supporting her, and she believes that every girl deserves an education.
Malala has received many awards for only being 19 years old, she has won around 11 awards already! Malala Yousafzai was the youngest person ever, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala was actually nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice, but won the second time. Some of the awards Malala has won are, The Nobel Peace Prize, the Sakharov Human rights prize, the Goodreads choice awards best memoir & autobiography, the Glamour Award for the girls hero, the Simone de Beauvoir Prize, the ambassador of conscience award, she won the United Nations Prize in The Field Of Human Rights, the Mother Teresa award and the shorty award for teen hero. “Today is a day of great happiness for me. This award is not just for me. It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is for those voiceless children who want change. I am here to stand up for their rights, to raise their voice… it is not time to pity them. It is time to take action so it becomes the last time, the last time, so it becomes the last time that we see a child deprived of education.” This was part of Malala’s speech when she won the Nobel peace prize. Malala was ecstatic that she won this award, but did not want to make it all about her. She wanted this award to represent all of the children who do not have access to education.
